I’m 45 now. My menstruation is taking longer than before. I used to have 3 days maximum but recently, it’s taking the whole week. Please advise.

Dear Ian and Kaye,

Every woman has a different menstrual cycle, which means periods come at different times. However, when your periods are coming too frequently or too infrequently, obviously these are indications of irregular periods.

Irregular periods are a common symptom of the menopause. As you enter the menopause, your hormone levels begin to fluctuate or sometimes decline. Dr. Prudence Aquino-Aquino explains that “as a woman approaches menopause, her menses change.” Your periods are regulated by the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which drive the menstruation process. But as you reach menopause, your hormone levels begin to decline and your periods will also begin to fluctuate. Sometimes coming more frequently than usual, or sometimes less. “But to confirm that there is no pathology inside her uterus causing the problem, you must seek consult with your gynecologist.”

Dr. Romerico Torres further explains that the normal duration of menses is 2-7 days with a few women extending to 10 days. “But it differs per woman. In your case from 3 days lengthening to 7 days is a significant change in duration. Especially if there is also a significant increase in amount/ flow, see your gynaecologist, he/she may have to do other investigations to ascertain the cause of this change.”

mentrual-cycle02Even though the majority of women develop some kind of menstrual irregularity especially in their 40s you shouldn’t assume they’re normal — you should always report to your doctor. There are a lot of factors that may cause irregular menses. See your gynaecologist to make sure that its not because of a hormonal imbalance or any other condition manifesting as irregular menses, “ says Dr. Torres.
