Which is safer for hairless bikini line?
Waxing or shaving?
– Mari, 27 years old, Makati City
Unwanted hair growth is a constant point of worries and concern for many women out there. There is always a debate of what is the right way to get rid of it. Waxing or shaving? But according to Dr. Sybil Bravo, none is safer, “we do not encourage waxing and shaving since the pubic hair is our protection against infections and irritants.”
Although the risk is fairly minimal, any break in the skin, be it through shaving or waxing could increase the risk of bacterial or viral infections.
For women who really just want clean bikini line (not totally nude), trimming is less risky. Dr. Jenny Co. explains trimming is preferable than shaving or waxing because it does not cause folliculitis – an infection of the hair follicle. Ingrown hair follicle won’t happen with trimming – the only downside is that as the hairs grow longer, it can cause itching. If you insist on waxing, “make sure to apply an ointment to cover the open pores. Bacteria can enter the open pores leading to infection,” added Dr. Co.
Always remember that pubic hair does have a purpose. It provides a cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion and protection from bacteria. It is certainly nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.
