Of course, as this will be your first travel experience, you’re a bit afraid to do it on your own. Traveling solo has its pros and cons — but the pros far outweigh the cons. When you’re on your own, you’re independent and in control. You can travel at your own pace, do the things that interest you. No need to bicker over the best way to get somewhere.

Bags in check, destination is a go, lodging is booked, fare is covered and money in hand, you’re all set to go! But before you face that whole new world, you should first be armed with the knowledge on how to face everything on your own. You need to be a smart traveler, because if you wake up and somebody’s stolen your passport and or your bags, ain’t nobody there to fix it but you.

 

Below are top ten tips for every solo female traveler to know.

  1. First and foremost, if you decide to travel alone, be sure and be confident that you can do it. It is important that you face a whole new experience with the intent that you really crave to be there. You should not look worried and fearful but be like a sponge absorbing every moment possible. There will be times that you may seem confused or even lost at one place, never panic, remain calm, be positive and look for a solution calmly.
  2. Be just like the locals. Try to blend in wherever you are. You can dress like the locals; eat where the locals do and act like one. Usually looking like a tourist especially if you are alone can attract the undesirables.
  3. Be cautious and don’t stay outdoors until nightfall. If you are new to the city and are caught in a place that is not so crowded or familiar, do not risk spending more time. Go to a place or arrive as early as possible. Also always have a back up plan. Not everything goes the way you expect it to happen, so be sure and have another set of plans just in case the first one doesn’t work out.
  4. For those who like to drink, be cautious and do not get drunk. This is for your utmost safety and protection and this will help you stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Tourist spots is not a reason to feel safe, even if there are a lot of people present at the time you are at a certain place, it is still your responsibility to yourself to get familiarize with your surroundings and to take care of your belongings.
  5. Your instincts are your companion. Believe and trust yourself when it comes to decision-making. Remember you are on your own, you only got yourself to answer to and most of the time especially if you are at an unfamiliar and new place, instincts always kicks in so whatever that instinct is telling you, you should hear it out.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask around. It is not shameful to ask for help, you can only do so much to blend in, but being new at one place, you will still feel overwhelmed, ask and be informed.
  7. For safety reasons, let other people know your whereabouts, may it be your family, a best friend or partner, it is essential that there is someone or there are people who knows where you are going and for how long.
  8. Wherever you are going, do your homework and research about the place. Know their culture and laws. What may be normal for you may not be a good thing in other countries/places. Respect others beliefs and know your boundaries.
  9. Always have your documents ready and have an emergency fund. You may never know when you will need it. So be sure and be protected.
  10. Of course, the most important thing is to have fun! Savor each moment and treasure everything. It is your journey and it is your life. So live in the moment and live in the fullest.
